MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two people were killed in an early morning accident at a Coral Gables intersection.

Around 1:20 a.m. a Toyota Corolla was stopped at a red light at 8th Street and 37th Avenue in Miami when the driver of a Toyota Camry, traveling at a high rate of speed, rear ended it, according to Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll.

“It sounded like an explosion,” said Javier Suarez who works nearby. “Obviously it was a crash.”

While police have not released the Camry driver’s name, CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald identified him as 26-year Ervens Prudent, a deejay from North Miami.

The force of the impact sent the Corolla across 37th Avenue into Coral Gables.

“The impact was so severe it basically crushed this Toyota Corolla. And when several police officers who happened to be a block away having coffee heard the crash, they ran over and there was no movement in the people in the Corolla,” said Carroll.

The occupants of the Corolla, 44-year old Maria Martinez and 34-year old Marlon Gutierrez, both from Sweetwater, were pronounced dead on the scene, according to the paper.

Prudent was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center with leg and head injuries.

“Whether or not the light turned green, alcohol, speed, all of that will be factored in to Coral Gables Investigation,” said Carroll.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and so far Coral Gables police have not filed any charges.

CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald contributed to this report.
