HALLANDALE BEACH (CBSMiami) – Police are apologizing amid an investigation into a chase and wrong-way crash ended with four people dead and a traffic nightmare on I-95 early Wednesday in South Broward County.

The driver was previously identified by police as Paolo Lafrance before correctly identified as Willie Dumel, 25. Police determined Dumel was in possession Lafrance’s belongings.

“Mr. Dumel was carrying Mr Lefrance’s identification, so we want to make that correction to the media and apologize for any inconvenience it may have caused,” said Opa-locka Asst. City Manager David Chiverton.

Opa locka police say they figured out the suspect was actually Dumel after Lefrance showed up at the station upset about mix-up.

“He just wanted to come in and clear the air he didn’t want to be caught up in something of this caliber,” said Chiverton.

Police say Lefrance’s ID was stolen years ago, and that ID is the one Dumel had on him when he was arrested at the crash scene.

The crash happened around 1 a.m. on I-95 just south of Hallandale Beach Boulevard.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Opa-Locka Police attempted to pull over the driver of a Chevy Suburban at 143rd Street and 22nd Avenue when it sped off.

Opa-Locka Police pursued Dumel until he got onto I-95 at Ives Dairy Road, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes.

Opa-Locka assistant city manager David Chiverton said their officers broke off the pursuit on Ives Dairy Road.

The wrong-way Suburban then crashed into another SUV at Hallandale Beach Blvd., killing four people inside. Dumel was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood with two broken legs.

“On behalf of the city, our prayers go out to the family who are going to experience this terrible loss,” said Opa-Locka spokesman Chiverton.

Opa-locka Police officials told CBS4′s Natalia Zea that Dumel threw a gun out the window on I-95 before crashing into the SUV.  It was recovered.

The impact was so severe the Suburban’s engine ended up here and the Suburban landed 40 yards away.

“In my nearly 25 years as a state trooper, this is perhaps the worst accident I have ever seen,” said trooper Joe Sanchez of the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident and the subsequent investigation closed down all southbound I-95 lanes for eight hours including the morning rush hour. They were re-opened to traffic just before 9:30 a.m.

Just before 8 a.m., the Suburban was loaded onto a flatbed truck to be taken away.

Police were able to remove two of the bodies from the SUV before it was loaded onto a flatbed truck.  The SUV was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Officer where the remaining bodies will be removed.

“There were four innocent people because of an accident like this who lose their lives,” Sanchez told CBS4′s Peter D’Oench.

“They could have been here on vacation, going somewhere, and now they have lost their lives.”

Sanchez said, “I can’t imagine why someone would drive the wrong way like this, not only endangering their lives by the lives of other people as well.”

Police have not released any details about the four people who were killed inside the Suburban and haven’t indicated why the chase started.

The Florida Highway Patrol said the four victims were from out of state and are not releasing their identities until next of kin has been notified.

Dumel is facing charges including four counts of vehicular homicide, eluding police, and driving with a suspended license.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – One person is dead, two hospitalized after the driver of an SUV hit two men standing on a sidewalk before slamming into a building in Miami.

The accident happened on NW 7th Avenue between 27th and 28th Streets.

The driver of the SUV went up onto the sidewalk and hit two men standing by the side of the Laguna Seafood Restaurant, according to Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll.

“I just heard something like a bomb, explosive so I ran outside and when I ran outside I saw two people on the floor,” said Daniel Posada.

“The two men that we had on the sidewalk, the first one was transported to Ryder Trauma Center in extremely critical, paramedics had to assist with his breathing so that kind of gives you an idea of how serious his condition is. The second person unfortunately died on the scene,” said Lt. Carroll. “Now the driver of the vehicle, when we arrived, was very battered and very confused which is normal when you have some type of head injury.”

The driver of the SUV was also taken to Ryder Trauma Center.

A witness across the street said the two men were getting coffee from the take out window of the restaurant.

Paul Jarrim said one of the men hit, who drove a taxi, was killed instantly.

“I feel for him, I feel for his family,” said Jarrim.

The SUV then slammed into a liquor store next to the restaurant. The impact caused bottles to fall from shelves inside the restaurant and injured Mike Jimenez, the store’s owner, who was knocked to the ground.

“I have no words right now, I’m just glad to be here, I’m blessed,” said Jimenez. “I felt lucky, I felt blessed.”

“It’s shocking that something like this could happen. The car just plowed through and after that the gentlemen got hit,” said witness Angel Moreno.

Several restaurant employees, who spent part of their day cleaning up the blood stains and shattered glass, were shaken by what had happened.

“They are terrified,” said Laguna’s owner John Alexander. “They were very lucky because if that guy had come in the front, nobody would be here right now, they would all have been in the hospital.”

Police have not released the name of driver or the two men who were hit.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Two people were killed in an early morning accident at a Coral Gables intersection.

Around 1:20 a.m. a Toyota Corolla was stopped at a red light at 8th Street and 37th Avenue in Miami when the driver of a Toyota Camry, traveling at a high rate of speed, rear ended it, according to Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Lt. Ignatius Carroll.

“It sounded like an explosion,” said Javier Suarez who works nearby. “Obviously it was a crash.”

While police have not released the Camry driver’s name, CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald identified him as 26-year Ervens Prudent, a deejay from North Miami.

The force of the impact sent the Corolla across 37th Avenue into Coral Gables.

“The impact was so severe it basically crushed this Toyota Corolla. And when several police officers who happened to be a block away having coffee heard the crash, they ran over and there was no movement in the people in the Corolla,” said Carroll.

The occupants of the Corolla, 44-year old Maria Martinez and 34-year old Marlon Gutierrez, both from Sweetwater, were pronounced dead on the scene, according to the paper.

Prudent was taken to the Ryder Trauma Center with leg and head injuries.

“Whether or not the light turned green, alcohol, speed, all of that will be factored in to Coral Gables Investigation,” said Carroll.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing and so far Coral Gables police have not filed any charges.

Fla. Racer Dies While Doing Almost 300 mph.

LIMESTONE, ME (CBSMiami/AP) — A Florida man, who held the world speed record for a conventional motorcycle, died Sunday morning after he tried to top 300 mph on a runway at a former air base in northern Maine.

Bill Warner, 44, of Wimauma was clocked at 285 mph before he lost control but it was unclear how fast the motorcycle was traveling when it veered off the paved runway and crashed, said Tim Kelly, race director the Loring Timing Association, which hosted “The Maine Event” at Loring Air Force Base.

Warner was conscious and talking after the crash just before 10 a.m., Kelly said, but died about an hour later in a hospital.

“No one will touch Bill’s achievements or be the type of racer he was. He was a personal friend and the land-racing community is less for his loss,” Kelly said.

Riding his modified turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa, Warner previously hit 311 mph on the same course in 2011, using 1.5 miles of pavement. That’s considered to be the world land speed record for a conventional motorcycle, Kelly said.

This time he was trying to hit 300 mph using just a mile of pavement, and he’d made several passes before the one in which he crashed, Kelly said.

The Maine Event is an annual timed speed event that utilizes the 14,200-foot-long runway at the former Strategic Air Command base that closed in 1994. The Loring Timing Association uses 2.5 miles of the runway for its events, and there’s an additional buffer of 2,000 feet, Kelly said.

On Sunday, about 400 spectators watched as Warner began veering right after passing the 1-mile mark, traveling upright for another 2,000 feet before exiting the runway and crashing, Kelly said.

The remainder of Sunday’s event was canceled. The Limestone Police Department and Maine State Police were investigating the crash.

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The Florida Highway Patrol has recovered an SUV they believe was involved in a deadly hit and run crash early Tuesday morning in southwest Miami-Dade.

The accident happened just after midnight at SW 40th Street/Bird Road and SW 97th Avenue.

According to witnesses a Toyota Yaris was were heading westbound on Bird Road when it was struck from behind in the intersection by a light colored Cadillac Escalade traveling at a high rate of speed.  On impact the car shot across the sidewalk and slammed into a light pole.

The driver of the Yaris, 67-year old Carlos Jesus Pildain, was killed.  His wife, Dixiana, had to cut from the mangled wreckage. She was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

German Rodriguez witnessed the crash and followed the Escalade as it sped off.

“You know I tried to follow him as fast as possible. I tried to do the right thing. I called 9-1-1 and they told me to stop following the guy. I gave them as much information as possible and tried to help out as much as I could,” said Rodriguez. “I came back and saw all his tools on the ground. A working guy and his wife, all his tools on the ground, it was heartbreaking.”

Rodriguez said the driver of Escalade was going so fast, he was unable to get the license plate number.

SOUTHWEST RANCHES (CBS4) – The search is on for the owner of a Ferrari involved in a deadly accident on Interstate 75, Saturday.

CBS4 News has learned the Ferrari is registered to race car driver, Radomin Vicente Delgado Lozada.

While it is unknown if Delgado was driving, the sports car at the time of the crash, law enforcement sources tell our news partners at El Nuevo Herald, they have lifted DNA and other evidence from the Ferrari to make determination.

Police have been looking for Delgado Lozada to speak to him about the wreck, but have not been able to find him.

Florida Highway Patrol is expected to make new details available, Monday.

The crash happened at around 12:40 a.m., Saturday morning.

The red Ferrari, according to Florida Highway Patrol, was travelling north on I-75 in the center lane just northwest of 138th Street.

Three cars were involved.

“In 20 seconds, I lost my partner for 40 years,” Miguel Larrieu, a survivor of the crash told CBS4’s Maggie Newland.

The blue Hyundai, which Larrieu and Jorge Arrojas were riding, was traveling north in front of the Ferrari when FHP said the Ferrari struck their car from behind.

That Ferrari is said to have ended up across several lanes and eventually came to a stop in the grass median.

However, because of the impact, Arrojas’ and Larrieu’s Hyundai hit he rear of another vehicle, a white Saturn, and their car rolled before stopping in the grass median.

Jorge Arrojas, the Hyundai’s driver, died on the scene according to FHP.

“The driver of the Ferrari fled the scene the car stayed because of the damage but the driver was able to flee,” said Joe Sanchez with Florida Highway Patrol.

Larrieu said he and Arrojas were headed home from a dinner with friends.

“And all of the sudden we hear a boom but the loudest boom I thought a bomb or I thought all my four tires had exploded and about three or four seconds later I see the car is losing control, losing control,” Larrieu explained.

Larrieu said the man he loved died with his head on his chest.

“I kept saying please breathe for me please breathe for me oh God please breathe for me.”

Larrieu was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, but was able to return home with only bumps and bruises and without the man he loved for so long.

“He joked all the time, he loved making jokes cracking jokes he was friendly to everyone what can I say everything that I lacked.”

His memories are all he has left of his partner.

“I miss him you never know I open a drawer and I start crying I look at things that we bought together,” said Larrieu.

The Saturn also ended up in the median, but the driver survived.

MDPD: Man Fleeing Police Causes Deadly Crash

PERRINE (CBS4) — Witnesses said a police chase ended in a deadly crash in West Perrine.

However, Miami-Dade Police said there wasn’t a chase.

Monday night, there are conflicting stories, relatives of the deceased and injured are demanding answers and a manhunt.

As of late Monday, police were still looking for the driver of a black SUV that crashed into another car near 105th Avenue and 176th Street.

Police said it had a stolen tag on it and wasn’t even registered in Florida.

Its rear window contained an advertisement for an adult entertainment service.

Miami-Dade’s Robbery Intervention Detail was on patrol in the area, noticed the car, and was doing surveillance on it, when then lost track of it.

Spokesman Alvaro Zabaleta says officers tried to follow it, but lost sight.

Moments later, they realized it had been involved in an accident a block away from where they first spotted it.

The driver reportedly bailed out and ran.

Police said the SUV hit a sedan with two women inside.

The passenger, 55-year-old Monica Patterson, was killed.

Her sister, Sonia Hanson told CBS4, “she had just turned 55.  She has 5 kids.”

Relatives said Patterson most recently worked as a house keeper and was doing her best to deal with kidney problems and diabetes.

Her son, Tim Patterson, told CBS4, “My Mom was quite lovely.   I definitely wouldn’t want to lose her to something like this.”

Patterson said he was told the car his mother was riding in was struck in a police chase.

“To me, the right question that needs to be asked is why were there no sirens?”

Miami-Dade Police Spokesman Zabalata told reporters at the scene of the crash, “investigators do not believe any type of pursuit was going on prior to the accident.”

Witnesses, however, tell a different story.

Elizabeth Wilcher told CBS4 it was a police chase involving black unmarked cars. “No sirens or nothing,” she said. “But the two black cars were chasing the big car and it hit the smaller car.”

A woman named “Jassie” was critical of police officers, saying she saw them run after the men who jumped out of the SUV.

“One lady passed away.  We could have done more if they had stopped and seen about the people who were injured,” she said.

At last check, police had not released the name of the female driver who was taken to Kendall Regional Trauma Center and is in critical, but stable condition.

Patterson’s family said they knew the woman and Monica were friends, but did not know anything about her.

Exclusive: Surveillance Shows Moments Before Woman Killed In Crash With Suspect Fleeing Police

PERRINE (CBS4) – Miami-Dade Police are remaining tight-lipped about a fatal car crash investigation in West Perrine.  But neighbors and family continue to question what happened in the moments leading to the deadly crash Monday.

CBS4 News, on Tuesday, obtained home surveillance video that reveals a little more about what actually happened in the moments leading up to the fatal crash near Southwest 176th Street and 178th Terrace that killed 55-year-old Monica Patterson.

On surveillance, a black SUV is seen speeding through a residential neighborhood and blowing through a stop sign. Right behind the car is not one, but two vehicles believed to be unmarked cars of Miami-Dade’s robbery intervention detail. Police lights are not seen in the video, and the cars appear to be speeding, but all is currently under investigation.

Mary Christine Ponder,  Monica’s mother, said, “I know they are trying to cover themselves but there’s too many witnesses that saw it”.

Moments after the cars drive by on surveillance, the suspect’s SUV ran a stop sign and struck a red ford Taurus—sending the driver to the hospital and killing the passenger, Monica Patterson.

“I feel kind of numb and empty. So that’s about all I can say about how I feel right now,” said Ponder.

Under investigation is what really happened in the moments before the accident. The video obtained by CBS4 News shows what multiple witnesses report—the suspect’s black SUV being chased.

“It was a chase. Trust me it was a chase. They’re saying it was not a chase”, said Ponder.

But police have a different version and are hesitant to call this a chase or pursuit.  Police said that they “attempted to approach” the vehicle and “lost sight” moments before a “loud crash”.  Late Tuesday, Miami-Dade Police said they will continue to investigate all allegations.

“They left from 184th,” Ponder said adding, “This happened on 105 and 177 they were all in the community people standing out watching so how can you say it’s not a chase. Please tell me that.”

Police said they were patrolling the area when they originally saw the black SUV which had stolen plates and an out-of-state registration. The suspect got away and has not been caught.

The driver of the Ford Taurus was taken to Kendall Regional Trauma Center and is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Her name has not been released.

Officers Recount Trying To Save Woman Killed In Suspected Murderer’s Path

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) – The officers who were first on the scene following the crash of murder suspect with an innocent driver gave their account of what happened minutes after the terrifying and deadly scene took place, Wednesday.

“I’ve been doing this for 23 years and this ranks right up there as one of the most horrific scenes,” said Deputy John Kelly with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The three officers risked their own lives to try to pull off a miracle.  Seconds after the horrendous wreck, they tried desperately to save Maritza Medina who was thrown from her mangled Mercedes.

“When I got to that scene, the first thing that came to my mind was if that was one of my own family members there, what would I expect from law enforcement or from somebody to save my family?” Officer Jonathan Dweck with the Miami-Dade Police Department told CBS4’s Ted Scouten.

Officer Dweck found Medina on the ground and used his car for cover from possible gunfire from the murder suspect who caused the whole crash.  He quickly began CPR.  That’s when BSO Deputy John Kellly pulled up to help.

“Jonathan and myself loaded Ms. Medina in the back of my car and we attempted to get her to an ambulance,” Kelly added. “We exited the scene and we made our way east bound on Griffin looking for an ambulance and around 195th, we found a fire truck.”

All of that was going on after officers heard shots from the suspect’s car.  BSO Sergeant John Rodriguez covered the two as they tried to save her life.

“We didn’t have to talk much out there, but we knew what we had to do and we got the job done,” said Sergeant John Rodriguez with the Broward County Sheriff’s Office.

The three officers said this is what they’re trained for and that this is what they do, but they admit, there’s more to it.  Sometimes, it gets very personal and hits home hard.

“I feel really extremely sorry and extremely sad.  Even right now I feel it in my heart it’s almost like it was one of my own family members,” said Dweck.

“Last night, I hugged my wife a little tighter, a little longer.  Life is fragile man, very fragile and when you see that in your back seat how fragile life is, it hits home,” added Kelly.

SOUTHWEST RANCHES (CBSMiami) – A Weston man died after his truck rolled over on U.S. 27 near Griffin Road.

It happened Friday night around 10:30 p.m.

Broward Sheriff’s deputies on their way to a call came upon 69-year old Raul Lopez’s gold Toyota pick up truck in a ditch off the northbound lanes in the 7000 block of U.S. 27.

The sheriff’s office said Lopez had spoken to his family just before the accident as he was heading home from work. He was travelling northbound when, for reasons unknown, his vehicle went into the ditch and rolled over. Lopez was thrown from the truck and died on the scene.

This same area was the site of deadly wreck last weekend.

On Saturday, around 11:45 p.m., 28-year old Joseph Livolsi was killed when veered off the northbound lanes of U.S. 27 and into a canal near Griffin Road.

Investigators have determined the vehicle first veered off the roadway into the east median. Sheriff’s investigators said Livolsi apparently overcorrected, causing the car to veer back onto the roadway, over a guard rail, through bushes and into a canal on the west side of the highway.

Arriving fighters went into the water, broke a window and pulled Livolsi out of the vehicle. He was taken to the Cleveland Clinic Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Both crashes happened near the intersection where Maritza Medina lost her life last month.

Medina, 48, was killed on September 18 when Antonio Feliu, who was trying to escape from police after killed a woman and her daughter, slammed into her car on US 27. During a stand off with police, Feliu took his own life.

MOORE HAVEN (CBSMiami/AP) — A man crashed while riding his motorcycle and died.

Florida Highway Patrol said the deadly crash was because of a bird hitting his helmet, sending him crashing into a fence.

Florida Highway Patrol reports that 49-year-old Douglas James Winfield was riding a 2013 BMW motorcycle through Glades County Thursday morning when a buzzard flew into his path.
